Welcome to Where the Garden Grows! Our clinic provides educational classes, offers vaccines to the entire family, and sells durable medical equipment and over the counter medications. We are committed to promoting health and wellness for children and their families; through our outstanding communication, exceptional education, and compassionate care, we empower families to eat healthy, play often and sleep well.
Why we started
When people think about the biggest stressors a pediatrician may face, they usually think of the long hours, the sick children, or the serious decisions we sometimes have to make. Nope. Actually our biggest stressor is time. With the advent of managed care and now all the insurance company and government rules and regulations dictating how we document, what questions we ask (whether or not we as doctors think the question is medically necessary), how we bill, and how we get reimbursed, the time factor is huge. In fact, since October of 2014 when ICD-10 Coding was put into place your doctor’s work day has increased by 1.5 to 2 hours. If we actually want to get paid that is. So we push ourselves to still give good service and jump through all the hoops that have been thrown at us.
Well, we at Where the Garden Grows Medical Clinic and Great Destinations Pediatrics want something different for you, your children, and for us. We want to get off this crazy hamster wheel of managed care and do things a little different. Your doctors will still be available at Great Destinations Pediatrics working within the confines of our current system, however, we have some other thoughts.
We have a dream of a different style of medicine, a different kind of relationship with our families, and a different way of looking at things.
We want to practice Integrative Medicine. Integrative Medicine is medicine that looks at the whole person whether baby, child, or teen, and considers all aspects of their lives. It emphasizes a therapeutic relationship between the patient, patient’s family, and the doctor looking at all aspects of life including mind, body, spirit, family, and community. Parents, the patient, and the doctor all take part in maintaining wellness and achieving healing when ill. It uses both conventional medicine and alternative methods such as help with nutrition, exercise, sleep habits, counseling, mindfulness, acupuncture, massage, and supplements when appropriate. For some examples of our integrative approach go to gdpeds.com and check out our patient handouts on Wellness, ADHD, Anxiety and Depression, and Headaches.
As you may have already guessed, our integrative approach takes more time than our current GDP system can allow. Through Where the Garden Grows we have the time to address all the issues you want to discuss and in partnership come up with solutions that will work for your family.
Here are some other services we provide for your convenience:
Vaccines for the entire family: Flu vaccine, Tdap, and MMR.
We sell durable medical equipment such as nebulizers, spacers, face mask and tubing, splints, and other products at affordable prices.
We sell vitamins, probiotics, and other over the counter medications and first-aid items.
We sell Dr. Prentices’ book An Apple a Day the Doctor’s Way: Dr. Karen’s Nutritional Guide and Cookbook.
We offer individual nutrition consults. In the summer of 2017 we will be offering individual behavior consults, ADHD/ADD consults, expectant parent classes, and group nutrition classes.
We look forward to serving you and getting to know you and your family better!
